Nancy Johnson is the featured author at the 2025 Friends of Milwaukee Public Library’s Spring Literary Luncheon. A native of Chicago’s South Side, Johnson worked for more than a decade as an Emmy-nominated, award-winning television journalist at CBS and ABC affiliates in markets nationwide. Her debut novel, The Kindest Lie, has been reviewed by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times, and is featured on Entertainment Weekly’s Must List.
This engaging sophomore novel, presents the crashing tides of progress and upheaval in 1969 Nashville with those of 1992 Chicago. This is accomplished from the vantage of a mother and daughter as they simultaneously navigate a similar nexus in their respective lives. They each confront their own dreams for the future against the challenging and tempestuous headwinds of race, equality, socioeconomics, parental authority, legacy, autonomy, and love. Nancy Johnson deftly utilizes a limited omniscient third-person perspective that draws in the reader and carries them into this very compelling dual narrative.
